How to Latte Art – Part 2: How to create the first pattern for your cappuccino

Since, as we all know, coffee is a feast for the eyes, a special moment of enjoyment is latte art – the artistic patterns on the milk foam of your cappuccino or café latte. Our baristas conjure up the most beautiful latte art every day, whether it's a rosetta, tulip, or heart. But how do you best achieve latte art?
What you need
- Use our freshly roasted espresso roasts and let our baristi advise you
- Whole milk is best for frothing, but alternatives such as oat milk also work well as long as they have sufficient fat content
- An espresso machine or a mocha pot for a well-extracted espresso
- Stainless steel jug with a pointed spout allows precise pouring
And off we go
- Making espresso
Start with your prepared espresso. It should have a nice crema, which forms the basis for your latte art pattern.
- Froth milk
Pour cold milk into your milk jug. Make sure the jug is no more than half full so the milk has enough room to expand. Heat the milk using the steam wand on your espresso machine, making sure the temperature doesn't rise above 65°C (149°F)—this will keep the flavor fresh and sweet. The milk should have a silky, smooth consistency, without any large bubbles. Read here to see if you've done everything correctly!
- Giessen – The Heart
Start with the simplest motif: the heart. Hold the espresso cup at a slight angle and place the milk jug directly in the center of the cup. Pour slowly to distribute the foam evenly. Once the cup is almost full, lower the jug to the surface of the coffee and quickly tilt it upward to form the "top" of the heart.
- Practice, practice, practice
Latte art is an art that requires practice. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't look perfect right away. Experiment with the position of the pitcher, the speed of pouring, and the patterns.
