In Acevedo, at the heart of Colombia’s Huila region, lies the historic Finca Villa Betulia – the home and life’s work of Luis Aníbal Calderón and his family. From an early age, Luis helped on his father’s farm before taking over a small piece of land himself, which he gradually transformed into one of the region’s most renowned specialty coffee farms. His tireless dedication to quality, precision, and innovation has earned him recognition far beyond Huila.
Today, Villa Betulia is home to more than thirty coffee varieties – from traditional cultivars such as Caturra and Castillo to experimental hybrids developed in collaboration with Colombian research institutes and export partners. For this microlot, only perfectly ripe cherries are hand-picked, dry-fermented for around 25 hours, and then slowly dried on parabolic beds over several weeks – a meticulous process requiring patience and precision.
Luis Aníbal Calderón is not only a passionate producer but also an inspiring figure within his community: he shares knowledge with neighboring farmers, experiments with new varieties, and helps drive the development of specialty coffee in Huila. Villa Betulia stands as a living example of how innovation and tradition can coexist harmoniously in Colombian coffee cultivation.
