How a filter machine works? Every child knows that—you'd think so!

Let's be honest: Filter coffee has a reputation that often doesn't quite live up to. Somehow, "filter coffee" always sounds like grandma's breakfast or the classic office drip machine that delivers lukewarm, slightly stale brew all day long. But wait a minute—there's filter coffee that can do so much more. Yes, really!

The filter coffee machine, this simple, often underrated appliance, can also conjure up the best coffee if you do it right. This isn't about a quick brew and "coffee is coffee," but rather about getting the most out of your coffee. So, grab your filter coffee machine and let's get started!

Here's what you need to consider:

The ratio of coffee to water is crucial. We recommend a ratio of 60 grams of coffee to 1 liter of water – this is a good base for your coffee. We recommend freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee. And that doesn't mean just any grind. It should be medium to coarse – just like you need for filter coffee. If you grind too finely, the coffee will be bitter and over-extracted. Too coarse? Then the filter coffee will be too weak and flat. Finding the right balance is key. So save your time and grind your beans fresh before putting them in the filter.

Sure, coffee is hot, but the temperature range in which the water ideally extracts the beans is narrower than you might think. 92 to 96 degrees Celsius – that's the sweet spot. If the water is too hot, you get bitter notes, and if it's too cold, the flavor remains flat. Many filter machines now have good heating technology. Keep this in mind when buying.

Honestly, this is often overlooked: Stir once. So simple, yet so important! The coffee particles don't all float evenly during the initial brewing phase, and this leads to uneven extraction. A simple stir after the first pour ensures that the water flows evenly through the coffee grounds and you extract the flavors from the beans. So, grab a spoon and give it a little stir. It's a small step that can make a huge difference.

And then? Wait. Yes, patience. The brewing process usually takes between five and six minutes. So don't interrupt the machine while it's doing its job. As the water slowly runs through the filter, the aromas develop, and you can be sure your cup will be truly rich in flavor.

Anyone who takes the small steps to a cup of filter coffee will quickly realize: filter machines aren't just a "dark old thing." So, stop underestimating the filter machine. With the right ingredients and a little trick here and there, you can enjoy your own specialty coffee at home in no time – without a barista.
