Mutitu AA originates from the Kirinyaga region on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya – an area known for producing some of Kenya’s highest-quality coffees. The Mutitu Washing Station was founded in 1963 as part of the Mutira Farmers Cooperative Society, which operates several stations in the region. Around 750 smallholder farmers actively deliver their harvested coffee cherries here, typically from plots of around 0.2 hectares, often cultivated alongside macadamia, beans, or corn.
The handpicked cherries are delivered to the station on the same day and immediately depulped. The meticulous fully washed process begins with density sorting: in water tanks and channels, floaters are removed and the beans are carefully selected. They then undergo two stages of fermentation in water tanks, followed by up to 24 hours of soaking in clean water – a typical step in Kenyan processing that enhances clarity, acidity, and fruit character.
Drying takes place on raised beds over 10–14 days. Finally, the parchment coffee is stored in well-ventilated bodegas before being sold either through the national auction or via direct trade to international importers.
